Natural Resources Committee continues debate on key electricity interconnector

28 Feb 2012, 15:51

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will tomorrow continue its discussions on the proposed €280 million high-voltage power line from Meath to Tyrone. The Committee will receive a briefing from officials from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

It follows a wide ranging meeting last week involving representatives from an International Expert Commission established by the Minister to advise on the issue, national grid operator EirGrid, ESB Networks, the North-East Pylon Pressure Campaign, the Monaghan Anti-Pylon Committee and Ratheniska Action Group.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle TD said: “The Committee looks forward to engaging with officials from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on this long-running contentious issue. At a valuable meeting last week, the Committee provided a unique public forum for all sides of the debate to thrash out long running issues in a frank, comprehensive and open manner.

“Following tomorrow’s discussions and reflecting on the International Expert Commission’s response to last week’s contributors, the Committee will issue its response for consideration by Minister for Energy Pat Rabbitte TD, which will reflect our comprehensive discussions on the issue.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 29 February in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 2 p.m. Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
