EU Affairs Committee to meet Swedish Parliamentarians

6 Mar 2012, 17:24

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meets a visiting delegation of the Swedish parliament tomorrow Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 pm.

Leading the delegation, who are on a three day visit to Ireland, is Susanne Eberstein MP, Deputy First Speaker of the Swedish Riksdag. She will be accompanied by Hans Backman MP, Emma Henrikson MP and Sven-Olof Salstrom MP.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “A key priority of this Committee is to engage with fellow parliamentarians to ensure that the challenges being faced by Ireland and its citizens are fully understood across Europe. Our Committee looks forward to a fruitful exchange of views with our Swedish counterparts.

“While Sweden is not a member of the euro, it has signed up to the Fiscal Treaty. Members will been keen to explore Swedish attitudes to the Treaty at the meeting, as the debate in Ireland intensifies in the run up to a referendum later in the year.

“The Swedish approach to resolving its banking crisis in the early 1990s will no doubt be discussed by Committee Members. The Swedish economy is now among the strongest performers in the EU and we look forward to engaging with the experienced cross-party parliamentary delegation.”

The meeting takes place on Thursday 8 March at 10:30 a.m. in Committee Room 4, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI.  The meeting will also be shown live on the Oireachtas UPC platform, channel 801.
