Committee to discuss impact of NAMA on Northern Ireland economy

7 Mar 2012, 10:54

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will be briefed on the potential impact of the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) on the Northern Ireland economy. Chairman of NAMA Frank Daly will address the Committee this Thursday morning.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “This week’s meeting affords the Committee an opportunity to question the Chairman of NAMA on its approach to Northern Ireland. Committee Members and MPs from Northern Ireland have expressed concern in previous meetings on the disposal of NAMA’s sizeable property portfolio in Northern Ireland.

“Approximately five per cent of the Agency’s portfolio comprises Northern Ireland loans, which are worth about €3.8 billion. Concerns around the potential impact of NAMA across the Northern Ireland economy are widely shared across the political spectrum in Northern Ireland.”

“Mr Daly has previously stated that the Agency is committed to listening to stakeholders in Northern Ireland with a view to helping devise tailored solutions for the local marketplace. In particular, Committee Members and Northern Ireland MPs in attendance on Thursday will be particularly keen to follow up on a request for a Northern Ireland representative on the agency’s board.”

The meeting takes place on Thursday 8 March at 11:30 a.m. in Committee Room 4, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
