Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to continue hearings on the use of arts to promote social inclusion

12 Mar 2012, 16:23

The Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht will continue its hearings on utilising the Arts to combat disadvantage and to encourage their greater integration and social inclusion within local communities.

Representatives from the Irish Chamber Orchestra; Limerick City Council; Louth Co Council; and Upstate Theatre Company will attend the committee meeting to address the issue of using arts to promote social inclusion.

Committee Cathaoirleach Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “Tomorrow, we will resume our hearings on using arts to encourage integration and social inclusion in our communities. Arts groups across the country are involved in innovative and inclusive programmes at a local level for all age groups and backgrounds. Tomorrow a number of these groups will have a chance to present and explain the various artistic activities that they engage in to promote social inclusion.

The Arts have always been an integral part of our society and central to Irish life, providing a sense of identity and being part of the community. We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with representatives from the Irish Chamber Orchestra; Limerick City Council; Louth Co Council; and Upstate Theatre Company to discuss how the arts can be utilised to encourage greater integration and combat disadvantage within local communities.

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 13th March, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2.15pm.
