EU Affairs Committee to discuss Fiscal Treaty with civil society representatives

14 Mar 2012, 12:20

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss the EU Fiscal Treaty with a number of prominent voices in civil society from tomorrow morning Thursday 15 March.

Professor Gerry Boyle of Teagasc,  James Doorley of the National Youth Council of Ireland, Dr Sean Healy, Social Justice Ireland and Marie Sherlock of SIPTU will address the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “Committee Members look forward to hearing from prominent agriculture, youth, anti-poverty and the trade union voices tomorrow.

“In leading the debate on the Fiscal Treaty in Ireland, our cross-party Committee has been informed in recent weeks by a wide range of academic and political opinion.  Tomorrow’s meeting affords the Committee an opportunity to explore the implications of ratification, or otherwise, of the Treaty for Irish citizens on the ground.

“The meeting will grant us an insight into the potential impact of the upcoming vote through the lens of those reflecting the perspectives of the farming community, young people, the marginalised and ordinary workers. The upcoming referendum remains prominent in the news headlines this week and discussions will no doubt cover recent developments both here and in Brussels, as debate on Treaty intensifies. ”

The meeting takes place at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow Thursday 15 March in Committee Room 3, LH2000, tomorrow.
