Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to continue hearings on promoting social inclusion through the use of arts

2 Apr 2012, 14:31

The Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht will continue its hearings on utilising the Arts to combat disadvantage and to encourage their greater integration and social inclusion within local communities.

Representatives from the Age and Opportunity; Filmbase; the National Association of Youth Drama; and Fibín Teo will attend the committee meeting to address the issue of using arts to promote social inclusion.

Filmbase is a not-for-profit resource centre for filmmakers, based in Dublin's Temple Bar. It is a public space where filmmakers can network, hire filmmaking equipment, take training courses and receive support and information about working within the Irish film industry.

Age and Opportunity is the national not-for-profit organisation that promotes opportunities for greater participation by older people in society through partnerships and collaborative programmes.

The National Association for Youth Drama (NAYD) is the development organisation for youth theatre and youth drama in Ireland. NAYD supports youth drama in practice and policy, and supports the sustained development of youth theatres in Ireland.

Fíbín Teo is Galway-based puppet and performance Theatre Company. Performing in the Irish language, Fíbín has grown to become one of the leading children’s theatre companies in the country, gaining a reputation for its highly imaginative, dynamic, and professional productions.

Committee chair Ciaran Lynch, TD said: “We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with representatives from Age and Opportunity; Filmbase; the National Association of Youth Drama; and Fibín Teo to discuss how the arts can be utilised to encourage greater integration and combat disadvantage within local communities.

All of these groups in their own way are involved in innovative and inclusive programmes at local level to involve people of all ages and backgrounds in arts programmes and activities. We are looking forward to hearing their presentations on the work they are undertaking to promote arts and culture in their areas and to use artistic activities to engage with local communities and encourage greater integration and combat disadvantage.

Cultural, creative and arts groups and community organisations have always been an important part of Irish life, providing a sense of identity and being part of the community and we are delighted that so many are involved in programmes to encourage greater participation in the arts in their areas.”

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 3rd April, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2.15pm.
