EU Referendum Sub-Committee to meet political and civil society voices

The newly established Oireachtas Sub-Committee on the EU Fiscal Treaty will continue its discussions on the Fiscal Treaty with leading voices from civil society and interest groups.

The morning session, commencing at 11.30 am, will include John Bryan of the Irish Farmers Association, Brendan Butler of Irish Business and Employers Confederation,  Mark Fielding of the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association and Brendan Bruen of Financial Services Ireland.

At 2 pm, Brendan Halligan of the Institute of International and European Affairs, Bríd O’Brien of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed and Noelle O’Connell of the European Movement Ireland will offer their views to the Committee.

Rounding off a busy week for the Committee, Declan Ganley of the Libertas Institute, Cllr Andrew Muir of the Alliance Party and Roderic O’Gorman of Green Party will outline their perspectives on the Treaty at 4 pm.

These meetings of the Sub-Committee on the Referendum on the Intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union will be covered live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 801.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “Our cross-party Sub-Committee is playing a key role in connecting the new Treaty with the Irish public in the run up to referendum day on 31 May. The Committee is meeting extensively this week, hearing from prominent voices in politics, civil society, academia and diplomacy over three days.

“Tomorrow’s sessions will provide an opportunity for the Sub-Committee to gauge the reaction of key Business, farming, community and interest groups to the Treaty. We are also looking forward to questioning Declan Ganley of Libertas, Cllr Andrew Muir of the Alliance Party and Roderic O’Gorman of the Green Party, on their respective approaches to the Treaty.”
