EU Affairs Committee to meet senior SDLP representative on Fiscal Treaty

18 Apr 2012, 17:04

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss the EU Fiscal Treaty with the SDLP's Margaret Ritchie tomorrow Thursday 19 April.

The MP for South Down will outline her party’s position on the upcoming referendum on the Treaty, to take place on 31 May.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “The SDLP has been an enthusiastic supporter of the European project from its foundation and the Committee will look forward to exploring its attitude to the Fiscal Treaty with a senior party figure.

“In leading the debate on the Fiscal Treaty, our cross-party Committee has been informed in recent weeks by a wide range of academic, political and civil society voices. The debate has also included a contribution from Cllr Andrew Muir of the Alliance Party, indicating that the debate is being followed closely in Northern Ireland.

“Committee Members look forward to engaging with Margaret Ritchie MP on the EU Stability Treaty. The ratification, or otherwise, of the Treaty by the Irish electorate at the end of May will have significant implications for the economy on both sides of the border.”

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow Thursday 19 April in Committee Room 3, LH2000. Committee proceedings can be viewed online via this link: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
