Communications Committee to engage with CEO of An Post

24 Apr 2012, 15:46

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will hear from Donal Connell, Chief Executive Officer of An Post tomorrow Wednesday 25 April.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “Our Committee has an important oversight role in considering the policy issues of public bodies. Encompassing postal, communication, retail and financial services, An Post is one of Ireland's largest companies directly employing over 10,000 people. Through its network of post offices, it plays practical and enriching role in Irish life.

“Proposals to enhance the range of services offered by An Post will no doubt be discussed at the meeting. In February for instance, the Irish Postmasters Union delivered a strong argument on how the Post Office, deeply rooted and trusted in the communities they serve, could play a central role in providing the unbanked with a basic bank account.

“Committee Members will engage with Mr Connell on how the network of rural post offices, so crucial to the fabric of rural life in Ireland in particular, is best sustained. Of particular concern to Members are the levels of analysis and rigour applied when decisions are made on closing certain post offices. Given the impact of these closures on the citizens we serve, Members will be particularly keen to press the CEO on the transparency in An Post’s decision making processes.  ”

The meeting takes place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000, at 10 am tomorrow Wednesday 25 April.
