Oireachtas Committee to meet Senator George Mitchell

24 Apr 2012, 15:17

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet with Senator George Mitchell to reflect on the Northern Ireland peace process and to discuss 14 years of the Good Friday Agreement.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy says: “The Committee is honoured to meet Senator George Mitchell, a central figure in brokering a lasting peace in Northern Ireland 14 years ago.\"

“As Chairman of the talks, his patient, imaginative and pra tical diplomacy played a defining role in facilitating the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Senator Mitchell’s presence will allow the Committee explore with him the role he played in the intense negotiations in the run-up to the Agreement and reflect on how the settlement has been consolidated with devolved power-sharing government in Stormont.

“Members will be particularly interested in sharing the work of our Committee with Senator Mitchell, given its role in considering ongoing developments in the implementation of the Agreement. We will discuss our trips to Northern Ireland and the border region, where we have viewed first-hand progress on reconciliation and community development, cementing the gains from peace in disadvantaged communities long blighted during the Troubles.”

The meeting takes place on Friday 27 April 2012 at 11 a.m. in Committee Room 4, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
