Fiscal Treaty Sub-Committee to meet Taoiseach

25 Apr 2012, 11:54

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD will address an Oireachtas Sub-Committee on the EU Fiscal Treaty tomorrow morning, Thursday 26 April, as it continues its discussions on the Treaty.

The Fine Gael leader will outline his party’s position on the upcoming referendum on the Treaty, to take place on 31 May, to the Sub-Committee on the Referendum on the Intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union.

Chairman of the Sub-Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “In leading the debate on the Fiscal Treaty, our cross-party Committee has been informed in recent weeks by a wide range of academic, political and civil society voices, from both sides of the debate.

“The Committee looks forward to exploring the Fiscal Treaty with the Taoiseach and Leader of Fine Gael. Committee Members will explore with the Taoiseach, who will lead the national campaign in favour of the Treaty, the position of the Fine Gael party in advance of the referendum.

“Both sides of the debate are agreed that citizens should be equipped with the clear information they need when they go to vote on 31 May. All the views put forward, including this significant address by the Taoiseach, will inform a Sub-Committee report to be published in advance of referendum day.”

Following the address by An Taoiseach, Jonas Sjöstedt MP of the Swedish Left Party will address the Sub-Committee. His party oppose the ratification of the EU Fiscal Treaty in Sweden.

Deputy Hannigan TD continues: “Sweden, despite being outside the euro-zone, has agreed to ratify the Fiscal Treaty. Mr Sjöstedt and his party oppose the ratification and tomorrow’s meeting builds on engagement of the Sub-Committee with parliamentarians of a wide range of opinion from across Europe.”

The meeting with An Taoiseach begins at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday 26 April in Committee Room 3, LH2000. It will be followed by the session with Mr Sjöstedt, commencing at approximately 11:30 a.m.
