Sub-Committee engages with Sinn Féin President on Fiscal Treaty

25 Apr 2012, 17:20

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD today engaged in a lively debate address the Oireachtas Sub-Committee on the EU Fiscal Treaty.

Deputy Adams will outlined his party’s position on the upcoming referendum to the Sub-Committee on the Referendum on the Intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union. He outlined the current difficulties facing citizens four years into the economic crisis and argued strongly that the prescriptions proposed in the Treaty would not solve Ireland’s, or Europe’s, difficulties.

Chairman of the Sub-Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “This was a significant address by Deputy Adams, following from his party’s referendum campaign launch earlier today. In a wide ranging debate, Mr Adams’ argument that European Stability Mechanism funding was not tied to the Treaty was vigorously debated among Committee Members.”

“In leading the debate on the Fiscal Treaty, our cross-party Committee has been informed in recent weeks by a wide range of academic, political and civil society voices, from both sides of the debate. All the views put forward, including this key address by Deputy Adams, will inform a Sub-Committee report to be published in advance of referendum day.”
