Fiscal Treaty Sub-Committee to meet SIPTU President

26 Apr 2012, 16:15

SIPTU President Jack O’Connor will address an Oireachtas Sub-Committee on the EU Fiscal Treaty tomorrow morning, Friday 27 April, as it continues its discussions on the Treaty.

Mr O’Connor will outline SIPTU’s approach to the upcoming referendum on the Treaty to the final meeting of Sub-Committee on the Referendum on the Intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union.

Chairman of the Sub-Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “The Committee looks forward to exploring the Fiscal Treaty with the leader of the country’s largest union, which represents over 200,000 workers in almost every sector of the Irish economy.”

“It is a timely meeting on foot of the Irish Congress of Trade Union’s announcement that they will not be taking a position on the Treaty. SIPTU supports ratification of the Treaty in the upcoming referendum, conditional on a €10bn Government stimulus package. Tomorrow’s meeting provides the Sub-Committee with an opportunity to engage Mr O’Connor on his union’s perspective on the Treaty.

“The meeting tomorrow concludes and intensive period of public meetings for the Sub-Committee, which was established in March to examine the EU Fiscal Treaty. Inviting both supporters and opponents from a range of backgrounds on the Treaty, our Sub-Committee has engaged with politicians, civil society leaders, academics and diplomats from Ireland and the wider European Union.  All the views put forward, including this major address by the Mr O’Connor, will inform a Sub-Committee report to be published in advance of referendum day.”

The meeting with Mr O’Connor begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, Friday 27 April in Committee Room 3, LH2000.
