EU Affairs Committee to launch comprehensive report on Fiscal Treaty debates

14 May 2012, 15:29

A comprehensive report on the Fiscal Treaty will be launched by the EU Affairs Committee this Wednesday afternoon.

Both the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs and Sub-Committee on the Referendum, established in March, heard leading economists, academics, lawyers, politicians, ambassadors and representatives from Irish civil society debate the Treaty. All in all, the Committee heard evidence from a total of 61 witnesses over 24 separate sessions.

Chairman of the Joint Committee Dominic Hannigan says: “Between January and April, our Committee and Sub-Committee heard the deeply held views of advocates and opponents of the Treaty.”

“These meetings were designed to allow the members of the Committee to engage with a cross section of opinion of Irish society and beyond, and to stimulate debate prior to the referendum on the Treaty. This user-friendly report distills the arguments presented from both sides of the debate.

“Our cross-party Committee hopes that it will inform and enlighten the citizens we serve in advance of what both sides of the debate agree is a critical decision for the Irish people on 31 May.”
