Jobs Committee to discuss unemployment and the operation of the Globalisation Adjustment Fund

15 May 2012, 17:22

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education will resume its hearings on unemployment and youth unemployment tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th May when it meets with Martin Murphy, Managing Director of Hewlett-Packard Ireland.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “As part of the on-going consideration of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, the Committee will be meeting with a number of interest groups and organisations working closely with unemployed people and involved in job creation initiatives as well as employers and business people. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to get the perspective of the managing director of one of Ireland’s largest employers on job creation and dealing with the problem of unemployment. His contribution will help inform the report that the Committee is preparing on the issue which we hope will put forward clear, innovative and actionable steps that will make a difference. It is important that we as a committee continue to play our part in helping to achieve progress and finding new potential solutions which integrate social protection, education and job creation measures targeted to achieve the best results of getting people back to work.”

Officials from the Department of Education and Skills will also attend the Committee meeting to discuss the operation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund.

Deputy English said: “To date three of the six approved EGF programmes in Ireland have been completed with over 10,000 guidance, training, education and enterprise interventions having been provided to almost 4,000 individual workers. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to get an update on the operation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund and a review of the three completed programmes to date.”

The Committee will also carry out scrutiny of EU legislative proposals;

(a) COM(2012)130: Proposal for a Council Regulation on the exercise of the right to take collective action within the context of the freedom of establishment and the freedom to provide services;
(b) COM(2012)131: Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the enforcement of Directive 96/71/EC concerning the posting of workers in the framework of the provision of services.

This meeting will begin at 12.45pm in Committee Room 3 on Wednesday, 16th May.
