25 Nov 2015, 14:44

The Committee will also discuss the Paris terrorist attacks with French Ambassador to Ireland

25th November 2015

EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, will appear before the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs when it convenes to discuss the 2016 European Commission Work Program.

The Work Programme sets out the Commission's plans for the 12 months ahead and identifies actions which will make a positive difference for Europeans in 2016.

Prior to this, the Committee will meet with His Excellency Mr. Jean Pierre Thebault, Ambassador of France to Ireland, to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, says: “Tomorrow’s meeting will start with engagement with the French Ambassador to Ireland to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. These terrible events have shaken us all and it is imperative that Europe responds appropriately. Tomorrow, we will receive an update from Mr Thebault on the ongoing consular assistance being provided and on the French response.”

“Members look forward to welcoming Commissioner Hogan before the Committee. The engagement will provide an opportunity to consider, among other things, the EU approach towards the refugee crisis, security issues, jobs and growth and environmental sustainability. Having held meetings this year on TTIP and ‘Brexit’, Committee Members will also be interested in exploring the EU’s approach to the major challenges facing the union today.”

The meeting will begin at 2pm in Committee Room 3, tomorrow, Thursday 26th November 2015.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

From 3pm – 4:15pm, the meeting will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; Virgin Media Channel 207 and eir Vision Channel 504.
