Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to discuss role of media and communications in actioning climate change

28 Nov 2022, 15:30

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 29 November, to discuss the role of media and communications in actioning climate change.

The meeting at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from:

  • Professor Ian Walker, Swansea University, Wales;
  • Dr David Robbins, Dublin City University; and
  • Professor Pete Lunn, Behavioural Research Unit, Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “One of the critical elements of successful climate action is communicating the reasons why it is so important, such that the public are properly engaged and understand the importance of actions that are necessary in and around our communities and which require us to change our approach to transport, heating, electricity generation, food production, etc.

“There is a role for the Government in designing communications strategies and also for the media with respect to advertising and editorial policy and ensuring balance is achieved and that climate action is ultimately successful. The Committee looks forward to discussing with our stakeholders the latest research in this area.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
