Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Recent Trends in Private Rental Sector with Residential Tenancies Board

28 Nov 2022, 16:00

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 29 November, to discuss Recent Trends in the Private Rental Sector with representatives of the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB).

The meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from Tom Dunne, Chairperson of the RTB, Niall Byrne, Director, Lucia Crimin, Deputy Director, Caren Gallagher, Head of Communications and Research, and Brian Gallwey, Research Officer.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “The private rental sector plays a key role in the provision of homes. The Committee has previously expressed concern at developments in the sector, including increasing rents outside pressure zones, the fall in the number of properties available to rent and the growing number of landlords selling properties and exiting the sector.

“Last week the RTB published its Rent Index Reports for Q2 2022 which showed average rents for new tenancies increased by 8.2 per cent on the same time last year. The report also showed that the number of new tenancies registered fell by 16 per cent in the same period. The Committee looks forward to discussing these issues and related matters with Mr Dunne and his colleagues.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
