Nomination of Taoiseach for appointment by the President

The nomination of a new Taoiseach will take place on Saturday 17th December 2022 from 10:30am. Details of media opportunities on the day are set out below with further information on the sitting of Dáil Éireann.

Media Opportunities on Saturday 17th December, Leinster House.

9:30am - Media will have access to the Plinth only for an hour before the House sits at 10:30 am  subject to accreditation in advance by the Houses of the Oireachtas Press Office.

1pm (approx.) - Photo opportunity when Taoiseach elect departs for Áras an Uachtaráin leaving from Kildare Street gate.

 

The Nomination of Taoiseach will take place in the Dáil chamber from 10:30am and will be broadcast live on Oireachtas social channels and on Oireachtas TV, which is available on:

• Saorview Channel 22

• Virgin Media Channel 207

• Sky Channel 514 

• Eir Vision Channel 504

• Vodafone Channels 201, 207 (Dáil Éireann)

 

 

Further detailed information on the Sitting Day

Subject to the necessity arising pursuant to Article 28.9.1 of Bunreacht na hÉireann, nominations of a Taoiseach for appointment by the President pursuant to Standing Order 34A(2)(b), in relation to which the order of speaking and arrangements shall be as follows:

-        speeches of a Government proposer and seconder - 5 minutes each; and

-        speeches by representatives of other Government parties, Sinn Féin, the Labour Party, Social Democrats, People-Before-Profit-Solidarity, the Regional Group, the Rural Independent Group and the Independent Group - 10 minutes per party or group; and

-        members may share time;

(III)   subject to the necessity arising pursuant to Article 28.11.1 of the Constitution, a Motion for approval by Dáil Éireann of the nomination by the Taoiseach of other members of the Government for appointment by the President pursuant to Standing Order 34A(2)(c), in relation to which the order of speaking and arrangements shall be as follows:

-        speech by the Taoiseach - 10 minutes; and

-        speeches by representatives of other Government parties, Sinn Féin, the Labour Party, Social Democrats, People-Before-Profit-Solidarity, the Regional Group, the Rural Independent Group and the Independent Group - 10 minutes per party or group; and

-        members may share time

·     On the nomination by the Dáil of a Taoiseach for appointment by the President, the Dáil shall, unless it otherwise orders, stand suspended for four hours either until 5 p.m. or four hours after the conclusion of a nomination of a Taoiseach, whichever is the later.

 

Unaccredited media must be accredited to attend on the plinth.
