Vol. 75 No. 16

Ceist—Question. Oral Answer. - Juvenile Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if representations have been made to him by the Dublin Juvenile Advisory Committee and the Council of the Society of Saint John Bosco pointing out the gravity of the problem of juvenile unemployment and the failure of existing machinery for dealing with it, and asking that a commission of inquiry be set up on the matter; and, if so, if he will state what action he proposes to take.

Communications have been received from the bodies referred to in the Deputy's question. One suggests the appointment of a commission of inquiry into juvenile unemployment, and the other recommends the appointment of a commission of inquiry into juvenile unemployment in the City of Dublin. These suggestions have been under consideration in my Department and replies will be issued at an early date. All the statistical information available on the subject of juvenile unemployment is already at my disposal and I am not satisfied on present information that a commission of inquiry would serve any useful purpose. A final decision has not yet been taken on the suggestion, however.

Will the Minister say that this is a very important and serious problem and one that should receive serious consideration?
