Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Right Hand Driving.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any consideration has been given to the introduction in this country of driving on the right hand side of the road as in Continental countries; and if he will make a general statement on the matter.

The effects of introducing such a change have been examined but no assessment of the cost has been made. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the only European country other than Ireland which still "keeps left" is Britain. Most vehicles coming temporarily into the State, however, come from Britain and the Six Counties, while the bulk of vehicles temporarily leaving the State go to the Six Counties. Consequently, in the interest of road safety, it is desirable to have the same rule of driving on both sides of the Border.
