Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South West Cork Harbours.

84.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the harbours, piers and slipways to be improved during the current year in South West Cork; and the grant allocation in respect of each.

Since my reply to the Deputy's question on 5th April last, work has continued on the Major Fishery Harbour development at Castletownbere and work at Hare Island has been completed. The estimated cost of the Castletownbere work is £230,000 and the State Grant for the Hare Island work was £3,000. The work at Garnish (Dursey) for which the State grant is £2,400 will be completed this year. Following a boring survey designs for improvements at Reen have been prepared and subject to completion of the necessary formalities work could commence next spring.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state how much money has been spent to date on the Castletownbere harbour scheme?

That is the estimated cost.

How much has been spent to date?

I have not got that figure.

If my information is correct, only a few people have been employed on the scheme for the development of Castletownbere. This is a major development scheme and surely with an estimated expenditure of £230,000, more people should be employed on it? This scheme was announced with great blowing of trumpets in 1957.

The Deputy is making a speech.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state how much money will be expended on the development of Castletownbere in the current year? How much of the £230,000 will be expended?

You have not asked that.

We will have a later discussion on that.
