Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Pound Fees.

86.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he has yet considered, in consultation with the various interests affected, the question of increasing pound fees in respect of animals impounded in the city of Cork with a view to discouraging itinerants from allowing their animals to wander in public thoroughfares in the city.

As I stated on 14th June, in reply to a previous question by the Deputy, a general review of existing pound fees is being carried out. All the various interests concerned have now been consulted and I hope to be in a position to reach a decision on the question of increasing these fees at a fairly early date.

As I have already stated, the fees prescribed in respect of animals are intended to cover no more than fair remuneration for the pound keeper in respect of sustenance and attendance on animals and it would be improper for me to prescribe a fee which would be in the nature of a penalty.
