The figures requested are as follows: Total national debt at 31st March, 1965 £636 million. Cost of service of debt for year ending 31st March, 1965 £43 million. Total national debt at 31st March, 1970 £1,009 million. Cost of service of debt for year ending 31st March, 1970 £89 million. The borrowings were undertaken to finance the public capital programme.
