Vol. 265 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Vote 22: Prisons.

I move:

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £339,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on 31st March, 1973, for the expenses of prisons; St. Patrick's; Shanganagh; Loughan House; Shelton Abbey; and the maintenance of prisoners confined in District Mental Hospitals.

The additional sum is required to meet

(a) the cost of additional staff and increases in salaries, wages and allowances and

(b) increased travelling and incidental expenses which were not foreseen when the original Estimates were being prepared.

Of the total sum required £190,000 is required for additional staff and £180,000 to meet the cost of a pay award of 10 per cent and the second phase of the 13th pay round. Increased travelling and incidental expenses account for £44,500.

Increases are partly offset by savings on other subheads of the Prisons Vote, amounting to £75,500.

Question put and agreed to.
Supplementary Estimates Nos. 47, 48, 43, 44, 26, 7, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 16, 17, 19, 50, 8, 37, 36, 45, 42, 41, 40, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 20, 21 and 22 reported and agreed to.

That concludes the business ordered.
