asked the Minister for Local Government when his Department will give decisions regarding the group water scheme for the Clogherinkoe, Ballindoolin and Claremount areas of County Kildare.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.
Kildare County Council have been asked to arrange for the carrying out of quality and quantity tests on two possible sources to supply this group of 34 houses.
Is it long since the Kildare County Council were asked to carry out those tests?
On 21st October, 1974.
Why was the scheme so long in the Department before they asked for those tests to be carried out? I understand the application and the information were in for quite some time.
The county council were asked for these tests on 21st October. I believe the Department inspector was overworked.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has studied the advantages of magnesium carbonate as a coagulant in water treatment for the purification of drinking water to ascertain whether it may provide drinking water of a better quality and facilitate the easier handling of sludge in view of the recycling advantages involved.
The position has not changed since I told the Deputy on the 31st October, 1973, in reply to the same question, that magnesium carbonate has not been used as a coagulant in water treatment in this country nor are my Department aware that the merits claimed for it in the Deputy's question have been clearly established elsewhere.
Have the Minister's Department carried out any investigation of this matter?
They have made some inquiries about it but from the information they have they do not see any merit in including it here.
Would the Minister ask the Institute for Industrial Research or, perhaps, An Foras Forbartha to have a look at it?
I understand An Foras Forbartha have been asked about it.

Clare County Council have, however, indicated that due to existing water demands on the public scheme, it is not feasible to extend the scheme. A possible alternative source of supply for the group is being investigated locally.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in areas where it is not yet possible to treat urban sewage before it discharges into lakes or still waters, he will make grants available to ring canalise it so that it discharges into the river below the lake.
Ring canalising is considered in this country where it appears to be one of the options in designing a sewage disposal works. If such a solution were adopted in a particular case, the cost would rank for sanitary services subsidy in the usual way.
Mullingar strikes one immediately as a place where the discharge goes into still waters. Is there a possibility that this type of disposal could take place into running water in several places rather than wait for years for the proper sewerage disposal facilities?
There is at present an excellent sewerage scheme being provided in Mullingar and the Deputy may take it there is no proposal to do what he suggests there. For those who do not know, ring canalising simply means piping the effluent around a lake to a point where the lake empties into a river. I do not know why it has been called that.
That is what it is called in Europe.
People here do not know the European terms and it is just as well to tell them what it is. I did not know it myself.
