Vol. 342 No. 10

Written Answers. - Wandering Horses Menace.

613.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the menace of wandering horses which have been responsible for the injury and death of citizens, he will introduce legislation to eliminate this hazard in built-up areas.

Recent recommendations for the strengthening of the law in relation to the keeping of animals have been made by the Law Reform Commission and by the Report of the Travelling People Review Body. They are being examined.

As the Minister responsible for promoting road safety, I am concerned in particular to reduce the hazard to road users from wandering animals. The problem is not however amenable to remedy by road traffic legislation.

In the context of the examination mentioned above, I will also bring the Deputy's interest to the attention of my colleague, the Minister for Justice, who is concerned with several of the aspects involved.
