Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Carer's Allowance.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

369 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Health the reason a person whose husband is being paid adult dependants allowance cannot opt to be paid disabled persons maintenance allowance, as this would allow her relatives to be paid carers allowance to look after her as at present the person would not be in receipt of a qualifying payment.

The determination of eligibility for disabled person's maintenance allowance in any individual case is a matter for the health board concerned having regard to the medical and means circumstances of the case. If the Deputy would let me have details of this particular case I will have it investigated.

I should point out however, that the carer's allowance which is the responsibility of the Department of Social Welfare, is paid subject to certain requirements laid down by that Department who decide what social welfare allowances and benefits should qualify the carers for payment of the carer's allowance.
