Ceist:

135 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the fact that large volumes of cars on beaches can significantly increase the problem of coastal erosion; the plans, if any, his Department has to address this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23069/98]

I proposed to reply to Questions Nos. 134 and 135 together.

Yesterday, when replying to questions from the Deputy regarding the unauthorised removal and disturbance of beach material, I outlined the legislative framework which applied and the procedures adopted to deal with the problem.

The examination of complaints includes consideration of the potential of damage in each case to the area concerned including the possibility of coastal erosion. This is followed by appropriate measures in consultation and co-operation with the gardaí, the relevant local authority and other interested parties to terminate the actions which are causing the difficulties.

I am not aware at present of any complaints relating to coastal erosion arising from cars on beaches. I assure the Deputy that any such complaints would be fully investigated.
