Vol. 496 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

60 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the location and square footage of the various military barracks being closed; the total number of personnel previously deployed in each location; where the personnel have been relocated to; the discussions, if any, his Department has had with the personnel in each location prior to the announcement of closure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22847/98]

Details of the location and size of the military barracks which are being closed and the locations to which personnel are being re-deployed are shown in the tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. It is not the policy to disclose the number of personnel located at any particular military barracks or military post. However, the total number of military personnel affected by the closure of these barracks is 880.

The closure of Defence Forces barracks does not come within the scope of representations. However, the decision has important implications for personnel and I met with RACO and PDFORRA on the day on which the decision was taken. Discussions on the implications for the personnel concerned in the implementation of the decision are ongoing.
