171 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the representations, if any, he has received in relation to the future use of the Phoenix Park racecourse; his views regarding the future of the track; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11669/99]

Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh):

A number of representations have been received in my Department in relation to the future of the former Phoenix Park racecourse.

The Deputy will appreciate that the development of racecourses is, in the first instance, a matter for the Irish Horseracing Authority.

I understand that the former Phoenix Park racecourse is in private ownership. Consequently any question regarding racing returning to that venue is one which should be addressed to the owners. I also understand that the Irish Horseracing Authority has not been approached by the owners of the site regarding racing returning to that venue.
