Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

244 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a special allocation of funds to South Tipperary County Council to remove a dangerous bend at Barnard Cross, Newcastle; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11640/99]

The maintenanceimprovement of non-national roads in their area is a matter for Tipperary South Riding County Council, to be funded from its own resources, supplemented by allocations from the local government fund. Tipperary South Riding County Council's non-national roads grant allocation for 1999 is £5.611 million, representing an increase of 15 per cent on its original 1998 allocations and 35 per cent on 1997 grant payments.

The initial selection of works-projects in Tipperary South Riding to which the various categories of non-national roads grants may be applied is a matter for the county council and my Department has no direct role in this matter.

Non-national road grants for 1999 have been allocated and there are no funds at the disposal of my Department from which a further grant could be made available to county councils.
