346 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of grant applications by local authority approved by his Department in each of the years 1997 and 1998 in relation to those pursuing undergraduate and post-graduate studies in Britain; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11785/99]
The statistical information available for the academic year 1997-98 shows that some 2,800 students were in receipt of maintenance awards under the higher education grants scheme in respect of undergraduate studies in Northern Ireland and in other EU member states, including the U.K. Separate figures are not available for Britain. The number of students who were in receipt of maintenance grants in respect of postgraduate studies in Northern Ireland was 166. The higher education grants scheme does not provide assistance towards attendance at postgraduate courses outside of Ireland.
A breakdown of the figures for 1997-98 by local authority area follows. The figures for the 1998-99 academic year are not yet available.
