Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

207 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the dilapidated condition of the Garda station at Ballyvary, Castlebar, County Mayo; if he will confirm ownership of the building; his views on the suitability of this building for carrying out efficient Garda duties; if he will deal with this situation by the provision of proper premises; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27228/99]

Ballyvary Garda station, County Mayo, is in the ownership of the Commissioners of Public Works. While the station is in a prominent location, I am aware that the accommodation is in a less-than-optimal condition.

As a consequence, I am pleased to state that a new, ‘basic unit'-type Garda station is planned for this location, which will provide all the facilities necessary for the local members of the Garda Siochána in the performance of their policing duties to the community. While it is not possible to provide a precise timeframe for progress on the matter, I can assure the Deputy that work will proceed without avoidable delay, in accordance with overall priorities within the Garda building programme and subject to the availability of financial and other resources.
