Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

31 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the amount of money which was spent by his Department to date in 2001 as a result of foot and mouth disease; the different areas where this money was spent; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30177/01]

Expenditure by my Department in 2001 to date amounts to £30.9 million, and EU receipts, in the form of co-funding of the compensation element of that expendi ture, will amount to £2.1 million. This expenditure includes approximately £11.1 million for general expenses such as haulage, slaughter, rendering, disinfection, accommodation, telecommunications, equipment, etc. A further £7.8 million was spent on compensation, while £4.2 million and £7.8 million respectively was spent on travel and subsistence, and overtime and unsociable hours, for staff in my Department. All claims have not yet been processed and, in addition, expenditure is continuing under a number of headings, for example, manning of ports etc., and the final cost to my Department will be higher than the figure referred to above.
