Next decade of centenaries a priority for the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement Committee

13 DFómh 2011, 17:21

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement discussed preparing for the next ten years of commemorations with people from different communities in Northern Ireland at its meeting today.

Among those who attended the meeting today were Dr. Ian Adamson, High Sheriff of Belfast; Mr. Sean Murray; Mr. Jackie McDonald, Mr. George Newell and Professor Wesley Hutchinson.

Dominic Hannigan TD, Chair of the Joint Committee, said: “The Committee has identified the next decade of centenaries as a priority issue. Today we had a very constructive and worthwhile discussion with people from different communities in Northern Ireland who are taking a lead in looking at the sensitive issues which the next decade of commemorations may raise at a grassroots level in their communities.

It was a great opportunity for all members of the committee to get an insight into how the upcoming commemorations over the next ten years will be dealt with in the different communities and the various issues that these commemorations may raise. It was extremely beneficial and useful to hear how people were working on the ground in their communities to find a way to deal with upcoming centenaries and events around them in a positive and inclusive manner.

On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank all of those who attended the meeting today and acknowledge the work they are doing.”
