Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to resume investigation into water supply, storage and disposal

24 DFómh 2011, 15:28

Mark Griffin, Assistant Secretary, Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government; Dara Lynott, Acting Director General, Environmental Protection Agency; and Dr Paul Johnston, Department of Civil, Structural and Environment Engineering, Trinity College Dublin will appear before the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Tuesday, 25th October as part of its investigation into the supply, storage, provision, disposal and cost of water.

Among the key issues which will be addressed at tomorrow’s meeting are:

• providing an efficient infrastructure;
• administration and administration costs;
• alternative sources.

Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “The Committee has identified water supply as a priority issue and tomorrow we will continue our consultation process with key stakeholders in the water sector. The provision of water, conservation and water shortages are crucial concerns that we as a nation must deal with. Nationwide we have experienced disruption to water supplies during winter cold snaps or shortages during the summer. On top of this, there is also the situation where vast quantities of water are lost through leakages in the system. Clearly there are challenges in terms of planning for water supply, providing adequate infrastructure and meeting the costs of delivering and maintaining a water system.

Our meeting tomorrow will provide representatives from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government; the Environmental Protection Agency; and the Department of Civil, Structural and Environment Engineering, Trinity College Dublin with an opportunity to outline the views on water infrastructure, supply, storage and disposal in Ireland. Committee members will also have a chance to raise any issues they may have on the matter.”

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 25th October, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2pm.
