Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education to discuss rates of transfer from Rental Supplement Scheme to Rental Allowance Scheme

25 DFómh 2011, 16:37

Officials from the Departments of Social Protection and from Environment, Community and Local Government will appear before the Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education tomorrow, Wednesday, 26th October, to discuss progress made in increasing the rates of transfer from the Rental Supplement Scheme to the Rental Allowance Scheme.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “The Rent Supplement Scheme’s main purpose is to address eligible people’s short term needs for accommodation while temporarily unemployed. However, more than half the current recipients of rent supplement, 51,000, have now been in payment for more than 18 months. The core objectives of the Rental Allowance Scheme were to reform the approach towards providing accommodation within the private rented sector for long-term dependents under the Supplementary Welfare Allowance Scheme and to help get better value for money for the State in the provision of long-term accommodation options.

Our meeting tomorrow with officials from the Departments of Social Protection and from Environment, Community and Local Government will provide members of the committee with an update on current situation in relation the rates of transfer from Rental Supplement Scheme to Rental Allowance Scheme. It will also allow Committee Members to raise any issues or concerns they may have in relation to this matter.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th October, in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am.

The Sub-Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will consider the Patents (Amendment) Bill 2011 with the Minister of State for Research and Innovation Seán Sherlock, TD at 1.45pm in Committee Room 3.
