Irish Language Committee to discuss the future plans for Raidió Rí-Rá

7 Feabh 2017, 10:04

The manager of Raidió Rí-Rá, Niamh Ní Chróinín will make a presentation to the Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands on Tuesday, 7 February 2017.

The subject of the meeting will be the development of Raidió Rí-Rá to a full-time FM station targeted at young people and available on an all-island basis, on FM and on as many other platforms as possible.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD: “Raidió Rí-Rá has made great advances since it was founded in 2008. The station can be heard since then on www.rrr.ie and for the past three years on DAB in Dublin and in Cork. It is also available on the Seinnteoir AP and on the Raidió Rí-Rá Ap. The station has a large staff and it broadcasts exciting programmes full of music from the charts.  The number of live programmes is increasing and there is a great demand for station podcasts as a teaching medium.

Since it was set up, TG4 has promoted the Irish language throughout the country through the medium of television and has created a greater confidence in the Irish speaking community.  The next step in this good work is to have a full-time Irish station on FM directed at young people. Raidió Rí-Rá says it is ready to accept this challenge but needs the support of the appropriate authorities to achieve its goals. Raidió Rí-Rá has a three-year graduated plan that shows how a full-time station can be established.  The Committee will discuss this plan.

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 at 5pm on Tuesday, 7 February 2017.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
