Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community to resume discussions on Traveller accommodation

20 Márta 2024, 16:10

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 21 March, to resume discussions on Traveller accommodation matters with representatives from Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) and Community Law and Mediation.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 10:30am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Eileen Flynn said: “The Committee welcomes the opportunity to speak to representatives from FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centres) and Community Law and Mediation to discuss the topic of Accommodation for the Traveller Community.

“Both organisations have had extensive engagement with the Traveller Community and have a unique legal insight into how current policies within the area of Accommodation impact upon Travellers. The Committee looks forward to hearing from FLAC about the current legislative context and their understanding a rights-based approach to Traveller accommodation. The Committee is particularly interested in discussing the research regarding the Caravan Loan Scheme undertaken by Community Law and Mediation.”

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad. The Committee was re-established in June 2023 to continue the work of the previous Committee, whose final report can be found here.

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
