Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance of Taxis.

90.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if insurance companies are requiring greatly increased premiums in respect of taxis that are fitted with a 2-way radio; and if he can give instructions for the cessation of this practice pending a full enquiry.

91.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the practice of insurance companies to treble the insurance premium on taxis which instal a two-way radio; if he will have an inquiry made in the matter; and if he will arrange for a reduction of the premium charged in such circumstances.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 90 and 91 together.

I am not aware that it is the practice of insurance companies generally to charge greatly increased premiums in respect of taxis fitted with two-way radios. If there are individual cases where rates considered to be excessively high are being charged they should be brought to the attention of the Minister for Local Government who has machinery for dealing with cases of this nature.
