Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Speed Limit.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to include Port Road, Killarney, County Kerry, in the 30 mph speed limit area in view of (a) the proximity of this road to the church and the schools and (b) the number of accidents, including one fatal, which have occurred on this road.

The position regarding the need for a speed limit of 30 mph along Port Road, Killarney, will be taken into consideration in the course of the next review of speed limits in County Kerry.

Would the Minister say whether it is the policy of the Department to move in rather than move out speed limit signs in expanding towns?

This is entirely a matter for the people who make the recommendation to me. I do not know the area well enough to decide whether it would be proper to move the signs in or out. The local recommendation will deal with that matter.

Would the local recommendation have an important bearing on the ultimate decision?

It would. The recommendation which will come to me is what I will go on.

Does the Minister accept the local recommendation or the recommendation of the Department?

The local recommendation will come to me through the Garda and the local authority. When the recommendation comes I will be prepared to accept it.
