Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Noise Pollution.

Seán Haughey

Question:

131 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to complaints by residents from Santry, Artane, Baldoyle, Portmarnock and Howth in north Dublin regarding aircraft noise, particularly at night, due to runway works at Dublin Airport by Aer Rianta; the reason the works have been further delayed causing more inconvenience; if she will intervene to ensure that those works are completed as soon as possible; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25526/99]

I am aware of recent complaints by some residents in north Dublin regarding aircraft noise.

The works, referred to by the Deputy, are being carried out on the rapid exit taxiway at Dublin Airport. The construction of this taxiway, which is an essential element of the ongoing infrastructural improvements at the airport, requires closure of the main runway at night and the consequential use of the secondary runway. As a result, aircraft overfly Santry and Artane. Under normal atmospheric conditions, areas such as Baldoyle, Portmarnock and Howth would be unaffected by these operations.

Work on the taxiway is scheduled for completion by the end of January 2000. Aer Rianta assures me, however, that every effort is being made to complete the works as soon as possible, subject to the constraints of weather and operational delays.
