Vol. 515 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Michael Creed

Question:

13 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has to facilitate further industrial development in non-Objective One Gaeltacht areas. [6186/00]

I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 170 of 10 Feabhra 1999. Since then detailed discussions have taken place between the development agencies and Government Departments regarding the implications of the new EU regulations for Objective One and Non-Objective One areas.

I understand from Údarás na Gaeltachta that it is amending, where necessary, its existing schemes to take account of this new status and implementing new schemes arising from changes in the responsibility of other development agencies.

I also understand from Údarás na Gaeltachta that it will vigorously pursue its support programmes for industry in each of the seven Gaeltacht counties. While differences may exist in the maximum amounts of grant-aid which can be allowed in different areas, Údarás is confident that good progress can be made, through the provision of practical assistance to industry etc., by being proactive and taking the initiative in various community development fields, infrastructure issues and other areas.
I am also looking at ways that Irish language based employment in Gaeltacht areas can be increased thus using the competitive advantage the Gaeltachts have in this regard.
