Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

212 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will introduce mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse; and, if so, the timetable in this regard. [19029/00]

Dan Neville

Question:

268 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if the White Paper on mandatory reporting of child abuse will be published in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 178 of 4 April 2000, when he stated that he expected to be in a position to bring the White Paper to Government in May 2000. [18367/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 212 and 268 together.

As previously advised to the House, the protection of children from abuse and neglect is a matter of major public concern and the introduction of mandatory reporting of child abuse is a priority for the Government. This is a complex issue and involves careful consideration. The preparation of a White Paper on mandatory reporting of child abuse is at a very advanced stage and officials in my Department are preparing a memorandum for Government on the issue. I expect to be in a position to bring the White paper to Government in July.
