Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Citizenship Legislation.

Willie Penrose

Question:

110 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if a person who was born in Australia and whose great-grandfather was Irish, qualifies for Irish citizenship; the steps a person will have to pursue if the person wishes to obtain employment here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7630/02]

The law concerning Irish citizenship is governed by the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Acts, 1956, 1986, 1994 and 2001. Persons born outside Ireland are eligible for Irish citizenship in certain circumstances as set out in the Acts. If the Deputy will provide me with the birth details of the individual in question and his/her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, I will arrange to have the matter examined further. The question of eligibility for employment is a matter for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
