Vol. 575 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grocery Industry.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

86 Mr. O'Shea asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the discussions she has had with the Director of Consumer Affairs regarding the practice in some major stores of giving the price of goods in sterling above the price in euro on price labels; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28746/03]

I have not discussed this matter with the director. My Department is in regular contact with the director's office about consumer protection issues of current interest. If retailers comply fully and clearly with their obligations under the consumer protection laws relating to the indication of price, there is no legal objection to them also displaying prices expressed in sterling. Care should be taken to avoid any risk of confusing consumers with an excessive level of price information.
