Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach to discuss pay increase for the role of Secretary General of the Department of Health

1 Feb 2021, 12:47

The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow to discuss the pay increase for the role of Secretary General of the Department of Health.

Tuesday’s meeting at  3.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House can be viewed on Oireachtas TV, and will hear from the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath, TD.

In advance of the meeting, Chairperson of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach, John McGuinness, TD, said: “The Committee very much looks forward to the first engagement of 2021 with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, and the opportunity to discuss the pay increase for the role of Secretary General of the Department of Health.

“The role of Secretary General of the Department of Health is an important one, but the reality is up until recently the role of secretary general of the Department of Health had  a salary of just over €211,000. Media Reports earlier this month that this will increase significantly is concerning.

“Of course, we all know that the State faces severe public health challenges and the role of Secretary General of the Department of Health is hugely challenging, but we need more insight regarding this process, and the explanation for this rise. In addition, we will discuss the ongoing review of the National Development Plan and EU matters.”
