Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

314 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allocate a resource or remedial teacher to the Holy Child infant school, Larkhill, Dublin 9, in view of its needs (details supplied). [11307/99]

In February of this year, a total of 13 teachers were allocated to 19 Dublin schools specifically to address the needs of refugee pupils. Of these 19 schools, eight schools were allocated a teacher each, while the remaining 11 schools will share the services of the remaining teachers as allocated by my Department officials.

The allocation of these teachers is based on assessments of needs within the individual schools and will be reviewed from time to time. It is intended to develop benchmarks to assist in the determination of greatest need for the purposes of future annual reviews. Unfortunately, I am not currently in a position to allocate such a post to the Holy Child infant school.

Remedial and resource teachers are allocated to schools to assist school authorities cater for children with general or specific learning disabilities. Refugee children with a language difficulty do not come within this category.
