Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to discuss draft National Energy and Climate Plan and national Long term Strategy

13 Beal 2024, 16:55

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 May, to discuss the finalisation of the draft National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) and national Long term Strategy (nLTS).

The meeting at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from Friends of the Earth, Stop Climate Chaos, the Environmental Pillar, and Environmental Justice Network Ireland.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “The National Energy and Climate Plan outlines how Ireland intends to meet its EU energy and climate targets for 2030. Ireland’s plan for 2021-2030 was submitted to the European Commission in 2019 and an updated draft NECP was submitted in December 2023. This outlines Ireland’s energy and climate policies in detail up to 2030 and looks onwards to 2050. The final version of Ireland’s NECP is due to be submitted to the Commission next month.

“Stakeholders such as Friends of the Earth, Stop Climate Chaos, Environmental Justice Network Ireland and Environmental Pillar have expressed concerns that the draft falls short of what is required under the EU Governance Regulation for NECPs. These stakeholders also have concerns about Ireland’s national Long term Strategy which are designed to achieve the required economic transformation and broader sustainable development goals while meeting the Paris Agreement objectives on decarbonisation. The Committee looks forward to discussing these concerns and related matters with our stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
